Chesterfield is a market town and a borough of Derbyshire. Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the "Crooked Spire" of its Church of Saint Mary and All Saints. The spire is both twisted and leaning, twisting 45 degrees and leaning 9 feet 6 inches from its true centre. An interesting point is that the spire is not attached to the church building but is kept on by its own weight. Bolsover is a town near Chesterfield. Its population at the 2001 UK Census was 11,291. Bolsover Castle was built by the Peverel family in the 12th century and became Crown property in 1155 when the third William Peverel fled into exile. A stone keep was built around 1173, surrounded by a curtain wall which was eventually breached in 1216 during the reign of King John. Staveley is a town within the borough of Chesterfield and situated alongside the River Rother. Leed is the largest city in West Yorkshire and famed for its excellent shopping, vibrant nightlife, thriving universities and sports. Leeds is an extremely attractive city with wonderful Georgian, Victorian, 20th and 21st century architecture. There are many fantastic museums, cafés, restaurants and theatres to visit. The most recent Census (2001) shows Leeds with a population of just over 715,000. It was a market town that became an industrial powerhouse and grew and developed into a service-based city economy with an attractive, smart centre. Today, Leeds is still one of the most cosmopolitan, fast-growing, innovative and prosperous cities in the UK with developments springing up by the week and new bars, boutiques, clubs and restaurants seemingly more often, the two universities adding to the vibrancy, and international eateries and shops. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the country, with people of many different origins almost totally in
Stratford-upon-Avon is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as birthplace of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare, receiving about three million visitors a year from all over the world. Weymouth is a large town in Dorset, England, situated on the western shore of Weymouth Bay on the south coast of England, 195 kilometres (120 mi) west-southwest of London. Although fishing and trading employ fewer people in the area since their peak in earlier centuries, tourism has had a strong presence in the town since the 18th century. Weymouth is a tourist resort, and its economy depends on its harbour and visitor attractions; the town is a gateway situated half-way along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Weymouth Harbour is home to cross-channel ferries, pleasure boats and private yachts. Weymouth's popularity as a seaside resort is attributed to King George III who came to bathe in the sea as a health cure for his nervous disorder. Between 1789 and 1805 the King and members of the Royal Family spent fourteen holidays in
Chichester is a cathedral city in West Sussex, South-East England. It has a long history as a settlement; its Roman past and its subsequent importance in Anglo-Saxon times are only its beginnings. It has been argued that the area was a bridgehead for the Roman invasion of Britain. The city centre stands on the foundations of the Romano-British city of Noviomagus Reginorum, capital of the Civitas Reginorum, and near to the Roman Palace of Fishbourne. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle it was captured towards the close of the fifth century, by Ælle and renamed after his son, Cissa. Chichester Cathedral, founded in the 11th century, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and contains a shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester. The Chichester Cross, a one-time site for the market, stands at the intersection of the four main roads in the centre of the city. Quite a lot of the city walls are in place, and may be walked along over what still remains. Havant is a town in Hampshire near
Leamington is a spa town in central Warwickshire, England. Formerly known as Leamington Priors, its expansion began following the popularisation of the medicinal qualities of its water by Dr Kerr in 1784, and by Dr Lambe around 1797. During the 19th century, the town experienced one of the most rapid expansions in England. The result was the transformation of Leamington Priors, which in 1800 was a village with a population of around 300, into the fashionable spa resort renamed Royal Leamington Spa, which by mid-century had a population of over 15,000. The ancient town of Warwick lies directly to the west of Leamington 4 km (2.5 miles), on the opposite bank of the river Avon and 18 km (11 miles) south of Coventry. The town of Warwick was founded on the banks of the River Avon in 914 AD by Ethelfleda, sister of Edward the Elder, as a defence against the Danish invaders. Warwick Castle is one of the most dramatic and complete mediaeval castles in the
Cheltenham is a spa town and borough in Gloucestershire with a population of about 110,013. And it's less than a hundred miles from London. Cheltenham is on the edge of the Cotswolds and has an image of being respectable and wealthy. Cheltenham has been a health and holiday spa town resort since the discovery of mineral springs there in 1716. The spa waters continue to be taken recreationally at Pittville Pump Room, built for this purpose and completed in 1830. Cheltenham's success as a spa town is reflected in the railway station, which is still called Cheltenham Spa, and spa facilities in other towns that were inspired by or named after it. The town is said to be "the most complete regency town in England", with its houses, characterised by intricate ironwork balconies and painted stucco facades, line the historic Promenade, squares and terraces and with award-winning gardens, impressive range of stylish shops and restaurants, and its festivals of horse racing, music and
